Former Louisiana state trooper Bobby Smith shares his story of inspiration with other law enforcement officers across the United States at the National Sheriffs’ Association 2008 Winter Conference. Twenty-two years ago, Smith was shot in the face at point blank range while on duty by an armed drug offender. Life from that day on was never the same for this state trooper. He lost his sight, career, independence and even his marriage.

In 2001, Smith founded the Foundation for Officers Recovering from Traumatic Events (FORTE) to provide training and counseling for law enforcement, fire fighters, and emergency services personnel recovering from traumatic experiences. He is also the author of two motivational books, Visions of Courage, the Bobby Smith Story and The Will to Survive.
