CSU GEARS UP ALUMNI ASSOCIATION STATE CHAPTERS

Last month CSU Vice President for University Advancement, Dr. Joe Wilkins, visited the Texas Chapter Alumni Association representative, the Honorable Greg Parker, in New Braunfels, Texas to discuss plans for developing a chapter.  All Texas alumni that have provided CSU with current contact information should have received an email the week of April 16th encouraging chapter participation and requesting information about any speakers or events they may find beneficial.  If you did not receive this email and would like to be involved in the Texas Chapter, please contact Greg Parker.

CSU SPONSORS AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY RELAY FOR LIFE FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR

CSU was a proud sponsor of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life for the fourth consecutive year.  This year, roughly 30 CSU faculty and staff put on their best “boxing gear” to be a part of our “Rocky” Relay for Life Team.  CSU won Best Overall Team Tailgate for having the best food and presentation thanks to the generosity of Cosmo’s Restaurant and Bar.  This is the second time we’ve won this award since 2004 when we also won Best Team Karaoke and First Place for Survivor’s Team Challenge.  Cancer has touched CSU in many ways – our involvement in the 2007 ACS Relay for Life, “Quest for Knowledge:  Adventure to Find a Cure,” will help CSU be a part of the solution.

STUDENTS REPORT HIGH SATISFACTION WITH ONLINE DETC ACCREDITED UNIVERSITIES

Ninety-four Percent of Online Students Achieve Their Educational Goals

Student satisfaction with online learning at Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) accredited colleges and universities is at an all-time high.  According to the 2006 DETC Outcomes Assessment, 9 out of 10 students who enroll in an online DETC accredited college or university reported a high level of satisfaction with their educational experience.

Assessment results also indicate that 9 out of 10 students achieve their learning goals through their distance learning curriculum.  In addition, more than 97 percent of non-degree seeking and 94 percent of degree seeking online students are recommending their alma mater to a friend.

Each year, DETC accredited institutions must randomly select students to engage in this formal Outcomes Assessment process through a survey aimed at measuring student satisfaction with their educational experience.  Founded in 1926, the DETC is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and Council for Higher Education Accreditation as a “nationally recognized accrediting agency”.

“The outstanding results of this assessment document that DETC colleges and universities are delivering on their promises to students,” said Michael P. Lambert, DETC Executive Director.  “For the past four consecutive years, survey results have yielded that DETC accredited institutions of higher learning are giving value and are worthy of public confidence.”

Online education has become an increasingly popular trend in the U.S., with an online enrollment rate surpassing that of traditional universities.  According to the 2006 Sloan Consortium study, Making the Grade:  Online Education in the United States, nearly 3.2 million students were enrolled in at least one online course during the fall 2005 term – a significant increase over the 2.3 million reported the previous year.  Colleges and universities all over the world are hopping on the bandwagon and are beginning to offer more online programs to satisfy this growing demand.

Student Spotlight

Stephanie Carlson
Placerville, California

stephanie carlson. . . Stephanie is completing her MBA with CSU.

I have been a CSU student since Fall 2006 and have had a very positive experience so far.  The reason I choose an online institution was primarily for the flexibility of the coursework.  I own a bed and breakfast in Placerville, California (Albert Shafsky House) and also have a full-time job to help pay expenses.  Running an inn with less than five rooms does not pay for itself!  So I need a study schedule that I can manage between work and the inn and a life.

Taking classes online is the perfect fit for me.  I can work when I want, between guests, and if I need clarification from an instructor, I have their phone number and email address.  I generally use email if I’m having trouble understanding course material; this works best when I’m working late into the night.  The professors typically respond within a day or two and I can move on with the course.

I begin each course by printing out all the materials (syllabi, quizzes, exams, etc.) and then add the timeline to the top of the paperwork and mark off assignments as I go.  I add my grades along the way to avoid any surprises at the end.

CSU prides itself on excellent student service and on many occasions I have received the opportunity to experience it firsthand.  In one instance, I decided to take a course at the last minute and the staff at CSU generously accommodated my request by rushing a book to me so that I could start the course on time.

An online education may not be for everyone, but CSU makes getting an education realistic and affordable.  You are provided with all the help you could ask for – a syllabus, texts, professors, a simple way to ask questions of instructors and fellow students and even a timeline to help you stay on track and finish within a 10 week period.  But it is still up to the student to maintain the discipline necessary to finish the courses and do the actual work.  If you are focused and really want to learn, CSU is a great choice for continuing your education.  I am looking forward to completing my MBA!

Alumni Spotlight

Randy Rudy
Aberdeen, Maryland

randy rudy. . . Rudy earned two degrees through Columbia Southern University.

As featured in the Distance Education and Training Council 2007 Outstanding Graduated and Famous Alumni publication:

Chief Randy Rudy has served the State of Maryland, the City of Aberdeen, and his country with extraordinary service and complete dedication.  After 28 years of policing at the state level and six years at the municipal level, Randy decided to further his education.  He enrolled in and completed two distance education degree programs with Columbia Southern University (CSU); a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice.

After serving in the Navy as an Air Traffic Controller, he began his distinguished 28-year Maryland State Trooper career advancing to Assistant Commander, Criminal Enforcement Command overseeing 16 diverse major statewide units including Homicide, Auto Theft and Missing Children.

As the City of Aberdeen, Maryland’s Chief of Police, Randy has provided leadership to a nationally recognized municipal police department, including initiating an award-winning, contemporary Community Policing Plan.

“Selecting CSU was a great decision.  The support from CSU’s professors was unbelievable.  The interaction via e-mail or telephone was more than acceptable when comparing online study to the classroom setting.  I learned a lot that I am using everyday,” said Rudy.
