Job Code: ADJUNCT, Position Adjunct Professor

Columbia Southern University is seeking candidates for adjunct faculty positions in English, History, and Earth Sciences for online undergraduate programs.

The Adjunct Faculty will facilitate all aspects of instruction, including mentoring and monitoring student progress, fostering communication and collaboration, guiding and evaluating student project work and other assignments, responding to individual student requests/queries, and similar functions. The course content, however, will have already been created beforehand.

Candidates should have, at a minimum, a Masters Degree with a concentration in the teaching discipline (minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in subject). Appropriate backgrounds include graduate degrees in Ecology, English, Geology, History, or related disciplines. Prior resident and online teaching preferred, but not required. The role of Graduate Chair for the College of Business (COB) will assist the Dean of College of Business with related programs in their planning, organizing, designing and delivery of curriculum and instruction to CSU students, as well as interfacing with the adjunct faculty staff to promote student success. The Graduate Chair will maintain a level of visibility throughout the CSU supporting departments in soliciting input that will promote our Mission and Vision Statement to provide a positive learning environment and significantly increase student retention. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recommend program/course changes to the Dean of the College.
  • Possibility of teaching 3-4 courses per year within the undergraduate/graduate General Studies program.
  • Possibility of relief teaching when full-time faculty members are on vacation, per assignments from COB Dean.
  • Assure course writers are staying on schedule and maintain progress chart on course development through final review and approval.
  • Assign course writers as appropriate and assure that course writers are staying on schedule.

  • Help develop a new student survey process and monitor its results while bringing any problem area to the attention of the faculty member and chair.
  • Assist in the assembling of additional information for new programs required by the accrediting body.
  • Keep CSU Administrators, Staff, Faculty, and on-campus Academic Team members updated on a regular basis as to the status of existing and new curriculum and programs.
  • Perform review, recruitment and orientation of new adjunct faculty.
  • Annual faculty evaluations, faculty discipline, and faculty performance issues.
  • Respond to student questions and problems concerning program courses and faculty on a priority basis.
  • Assist in cases of plagiarism.
  • Assist in conducting timely payments for course writers.
  • Assist in their quarterly meetings of the Academic Advisory Board.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of program assessment documents.
  • Interface with the Academic Instructional Design Team in maintaining the continuity and accuracy of program courses.
  • Interface with other CSU Departments as needed to address changes to program courses, policies and procedures

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Additional duties as needed and defined by program College Dean.
  • Interact with students as necessary.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Observe and evaluate faculty activity and progress.
  • Regularly audit courses.
  • Supervise and mentor faculty; participate in faculty development and staff training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Terminal degree.
  • Experience in faculty interaction and mentoring is desirable.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant technology.
  • Experience in offering electronically delivered curriculum.
  • Experience with Blackboard or other learning course management system desirable.
  • 2+ years of related academic experience.

Computer Skills

Must have solid knowledge of computer documents and be able to operate a keyboard, mouse, be able to type proficiently, and have basic knowledge of email and spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software such as Microsoft Office , Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word, as well as other computer-based applications.
